Dr Peta Skilbeck

BMedSci, MBBS, FRANZCOG

Obstetrician & Gynaecologist

About Dr Peta Skilbeck

Dr Peta Skilbeck is the Founder and Clinical Director of Intuition Private Obstetrics and Gynaecology, offering expert medical care for women on the Central Coast.

Dr Peta Skilbeck is an accomplished obstetrician and gynaecologist, and infertility expert who grew up on the Central Coast. She offers 12+ years of experience at the highest level and is known for her attention to detail, her never-rushed, comprehensive consultations, her ability to truly listen, and her warm and bubbly personality. She offers obstetric, gynaecological and infertility services.

Peta has two children and understands what it is like being a mother and importantly, giving birth.  She appreciates exactly what you expect from this unique, rare, beautiful experience; both pre-and-postpartum. Peta’s primary concern is the safety of both the mother and the baby, and to assist in creating a memorable first encounter with your precious newborn.

Dr Skilbeck has a very low unplanned caesarean rate. This means, for patients who have not requested a caesarean, very few end up with one. The decision for a caesarean is naturally guided by the welfare of the baby and the mother during birth.

Dr Skilbeck completed her education locally at St Patrick’s Primary School, St Joseph’s East Gosford and Central Coast Grammar. She obtained her medical degree (MBBS) from the University of Sydney and was accepted into O&G specialist training. She then trained at many leading, high-volume women’s health units across NSW, including Royal Prince Alfred (RPA), John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle, Gosford District Hospital, Maitland, Taree and Belmont Hospitals, where she undertook extensive training in low and high-risk obstetrics, as well as laparoscopic “keyhole” gynaecological surgery.

Dr Skilbeck is a Fellow of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (RANZCOG) and is accredited with Genea Newcastle in fertility medicine. She has considerable expertise managing a range of common gynaecological conditions and fully understands how this can impact your quality of life. Peta provides highly-personalised care and advice, tailored to your individual circumstances, in a private, safe and comfortable environment. This may involve medical or surgical management of your condition, or it might involve our amazing team of midwives, dieticians, physiotherapists and lactation consultants at Intuition Private who she works closely with.

Questions & Answers with Dr Peta Skilbeck

I chose this profession because I love the idea of pregnancy and birth.  From a very young age, I have wanted to be a doctor, and there was no other area of medicine which was as fascinating to me. I have also struggled myself with being able to fall pregnant and have required fertility treatment to help me conceive my son and so I am also passionate about helping couples struggling with infertility.

Carrying a baby and giving birth is one of the most amazing events in your life for both the parents and indeed the whole family.  That moment where the parent(s) lay eyes on their baby for the first time is magic and to be a part of that very intimate moment is an honour. Bringing new life into the world and helping parents achieve that is lovely. I imagine the motherhood and birth journey, while exciting, is also anxiety-provoking for a lot of reasons, and so to form a relationship of trust with the woman giving birth in particular, is a wonderful job to perform.  I also just really actually love the process of birth.

I would say that while the rewards are immense, it does affect your lifestyle to a huge degree.  When you are on-call, you are expected to be present and available 24/7.  You could not do this job well without being incredibly passionate.  I also have an amazing support network – my husband, my children, and their grandparents – who are also on-call 24/7.  In addition, my support team at Intuition Private and Gosford Private Hospital are fantastic and will always go out of their ways to help me spend all my efforts on supporting women’s health.

Don’t put expectations on yourself about the birth – a preference of how you would like the day to go is encouraged (and I had a ‘Birth Plan’ myself which never made it out of my suitcase and was completely different to how things went), but at the end of the day, babies are unpredictable and the end result is to have a healthy mum and baby (with mum’s mental health at the forefront of this statement).

Be prepared for how exhausting parenthood is – especially in the early days. I completely underestimated what caring for a newborn would be like.  Be gentle on yourself – your main focus needs to be you and your baby.

Enjoy the process (even with the hard parts).  You do not get these moments back and very soon, you will have a teenager who does not want you to go to any events with them.  Babies are so little and grow up very fast.
